Women in India face many difficulties during pregnancy, and if the newborn is sick, it is difficult for a low-income parent to meet the medical needs. Understanding these concerns, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram on 1st June 2011. Benefits Under Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram (for Pregnant Women)
Pregnant women will get the following list of benefits at the time of delivery under the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram scheme.
- Cashless delivery at network government hospitals
- Free of cost Cesarean delivery at government health facilities
- Hospital stay in expenses up to 3 days in the case of normal delivery
- Hospital stay expenses up to 7 days in the case of cesarean delivery
- Drugs and other consumables prescribed by the attending medical practitioner
- Diagnostic tests related to pregnancy, such as blood test, urine test, ultrasonography, etc. will also be covered
- Pregnant women will get free diet during health institutions stay
- Provision of blood will be free of cost if it is required during the delivery
- There will be an exemption from user charges
- Transportation cost from home to health institutions
- Transportation cost between facilities (for referral)
- Drop back service from health institutions to home after 48 hours of stay
Benefits Under Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram (for Newborn)
In case your newborn falls sick, the [parents will get the following benefits under Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram –
- Free treatment up to 30 days from birth at government health facilities only.
- Expenses of drugs and consumables
- Diagnostics tests
- Cost of blood
- Exemption on user charges
- Transportation fee (from Home to Health Institutions)
- Transportation fee (between facilities, in case of referral)
- Drop back from Institutions to home
Note – Now the above-mentioned benefits will be available for sick infants as well.
Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram Emergency Transportation
In case of emergency hospitalization, you can use the following transportation services –
- 108 Ambulance service
- State district clinic, sub-district clinic, community health center, and other clinic ambulance or vehicles.
Note – You can also use your district/state available ambulance, taxi and other transportation services.
Payment of Transportation Expenses Under Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram
If the attending medical practitioner provides a referral to another hospital, the company will pay the referral transportation expenses for pregnant women and sick newborns. The transportation expenses will be covered as follows –
- INR 125 for 12 Km
- INR 250 for above 12 Km to maximum 25 Km
However, above 25 Km, INR 7 will be covered for each kilometer.
